Babies and Airplanes

I have a confession. I am secretly terrified of something when our babies arrive - we've got awhile but I'm scared nonetheless. No it's not staying awake all night feeding, burping, and changing the babies. It's not even the stress it may put on our relationship. I'm scared of flying with babies. Yes, I said it. I work on airplanes everyday. One would think I would be most comfortable there. I'm terrified. It's a 15 hour flight from Delhi to New York and then we will make a connection for a 2 hour flight to Florida.

I've been having this nightmare over and over. Ruben and I are half way into our 15 hour flight. My baby won't stop screaming. I'm walking all over the plane trying to calm him/her. "I'll buy you a horse if you be quiet." Ruben of course is sitting with his Bose headsets on and his baby is fast asleep. Each time I walk past, he tells me, "You've got to see this movie." Passengers are screaming at me "Shut that thing up." The pilot even comes out and tells me they will land in Kenya to dump me off if I can't quiet my baby.

Since I doubt taking a boat is an option, I imagine I'll manage somehow. I hope this lady is working my flight when we return:

In other news, I finally broke down and told 2 of my six siblings about our impending baby plans. Surprisingly they were really cool about it. Even my conservative, Fox news loving younger sister was excited. And they asked no stupid questions from my prior post. I thought that was a plus.

  1. I LOVE that video! Flying with a newborn is not a problem, you will be pleasantly surprised. Bringing our twins home from India was easy. Flying with an 8 month old now that is a different story.

  2. We second that! We flew the same route with 5 week old twins and they mostly slept the entire trip. Since then we couldn't care less if people complain. Any sane person will have headphones to block out the noise on a 15 hr flight. Just make sure you have a decent connection time when you land in the states. Take a few hours to re-group!

  3. We were just talking about this last week. Sure hope our twins will behave during the flight back. The video is hilarious...I'm sure our flight attendant friends would absolutely love it too! :)

  4. Ha! I keep thinking the same thing! If it helps any, we just met with Jason and Adrián (Stalking the Stork) and they said their 2 girls were angels on the flight. No problems whatsoever on their flight back to LA.

  5. I am sure I'm jinxing it but newborns on planes I've heard are generally very good. We had no problem DC to Honolulu and it was a 15-hour travel time. Except of course for the woman who asked me on the puddle jumper from DC to Newark if I knew where the mother was. I say goodbye to my bose headphones for a while...and so should Ruben :-) lol

  6. We also can say the flight home, 33 hours with lay over, we uneventful. We were exhausted but the girls were rested and happy. Loved the video!

  7. That video is awesome!
I worry about the travel too. I wonder if the 15 hour flight is better or the one that stops in Amsterdam halfway through is better. I'm thinking with babies the 15 one is better even though I normally prefer the other.

  9. Nope, no problems! They were snug and happy in their bassinets from DEL-MUC, but decided they wanted to stay in our arms from MUC-LAX, 12 hours! Still, they were the best-behaved babies on either flight.

  10. I can't wait to be worried about the same thing. I bet the babies will probably sleep most of the time, just like everyone says in the comments.

  12. I love that video! We flew Del to Ewr with our twins and they were amazing. They are too little at that age to cry loudly and usually just need fed or changed so it's a relatively easy fix. We have flown with them a few times now and as long as you are prepared with all the gear I don't think it's very difficult.

  13. HA that's classic. We're hoping to get the non-stop back to London just to avoid dealing with connection drama. But we keep thinking it's going to be comical to say the least. Look forward to seeing you guys in Delhi!
